KILIMANJARO FAQS

Our lead tour guides were born and bred on Mount Kilimanjaro. They were brought up as part of the 'Chaga Tribe'. Traditionally Chaga tribesmen live on the southern and eastern slopes of Kilimanjaro near Moshi. As our leads guides were raised on the Mountain they not only know it inside out, but they they have experience in reading the weather conditions, knowing how to prevent altitude sickness and most importantly because they know parts of the mountain others don't, they can tailor any route to suit your ability which increases your chances of reaching the summit, Uhuru peak. All of our lead guides can speak English and are very good with people. They will motivate you, help you, and do everything they can to make sure you reach your goal of conquering the Kilimanjaro climb.
Be properly equipped - An essential part of your preparation will be to ensure that you are well equipped for the climb. Print out a final checklist and mark it off once you have packed it to make sure that you don't forget anything. Be physically prepared - It is important that your body is ready for the physical challenges it will face whilst climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Make sure you start training months in advance to reach the fitness levels that are required to complete the climb. Be mentally prepared - If you believe you can, you will. This should be your mantra when climbing Kilimanjaro. Your mental stamina will get you through the more difficult parts of the climb. You may be physically fit and have all the right equipment, but without a positive attitude you will struggle and may not complete the summit.
All of our guides have at least 8 years experience climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and we have a a success rate of 95% for people reaching the summit. This is mainly due to our experience and knowledge of the mountain.
It is recommended that you bring: 1 x Daypack which you will carry with you during the hike. (15 lbs) 1 x Duffle bag/Backpack which the porter will carry (30lbs) The daypack will contain the stuff that you might need during the day such as water, lunch, snacks, rain gear, camera and an extra layer of clothing. The Dufflebag/Backpack will be carried from campsite to campsite for you. This is contain all your other clothing, toiletries etc. You will not have access to this during the day. Dufflebags do not have to be waterproof as the porters will put it inside another larger waterproof bag to project it. Backpacks do have to be waterproof as the porter will most likely wear it as a backpack when carrying it.
To begin your booking please fill out a booking enquiry form. This will give us all the information we need to start planning your trip. Once the dates, accommodation and the route has been chosen we will require a deposit in order to confirm the booking.

Once your trip has been confirmed the deposit is non-refundable. Cancellation Fees 60 days or more prior to your trip start date, the cancellation fee is 20% of the total trip price. 59 to 32 days prior to trip departure, 50% of the total trip price will be refunded. 31 days or less prior to trip departure, there is no refund.
We can pick you up from Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha Airport/ Arusha shuttle station.
The prevent altitude sickness you must properly acclimatised and this takes time. The main way to prevent it is to not ascend too quickly. If you show signs of altitude sickness, then you must descend otherwise it could be fatal. The guides will know about the symptoms of altitude sickness and they will know how to look after you and how to avoid it. But we also recommend that you learn about the symptoms too because it is better to be safe than sorry.
Climbers must be 18 years of age or over to climb alone. You can still do the climb if you are under the age of 18 but you must have an adult doing the climb with you.
Yes, a single climber can join any group climb or even book their own private climb. We do not have a minimum number of climbers in order for a climb to be guaranteed to depart.
Make sure that you get the correct travel and medical insurance, you have to make sure that it will cover you for the climb up Kilimanjaro.
For medical and inoculations advice contact your GP before you travel. We recommend you do this at least 3 months) before you come as you may need injections/tablets.
The Tanzanian Shilling is the local currency. You can exchange pounds, dollars and traveller's cheques at the airport but we would recommend also getting some in advance to get better rates.
The answer to this is Yes. The exact tipping amount depends on group size and how many days were spent on the mountain. The average recommended tip per group per day: Chief guide – US $ 20 per chief guide per day from the group Assistant Guide – US $ 12 per assistant guide per day from the group Cook – US $ 8 per cook per day from the group Porters – US $ 6 per porter per day from the group It is recommended not to pay your porters any tips until you and all your gear have descended from the mountain.
